Remarkable Films of an Indian Legend – Meena Kumari

Meena Kumari began her career as a child artist in order to support her poor family. When she was a child, she wanted to be like other children and attend school but she was born for something bigger. She came to be known as one of the celebrated female stars of Indian film industry and even after several years of her death, film lovers and critics consider her as a classy actress of all times. Several of her movies are regarded as iconic films.
Baiju Bawra
Even though the public saw her in 20 movies as a child artist, in her full fledged career she met with success with the film Baiju Bawra , which hit the theatres in 1953. She easily enacted the character of a lover who negates herself for the mental and material advancement of her lover. For her lover to be popular because of his music, she endured the pain. Meena Kumari became a star overnight in 1954 when she won the 1st award in the category of best actress in Filmfare Awards.
Parineeta
In Parineeta, her charismatic enacting went on. This socially inclined movie depicts the life of a poor wife hiding her marriage to protect her rich husband. The movie saw Meena Kumari and Ashok Kumar giving some remarkable performances and for this, in the year 1955, she won the Best Actress award (2nd time) in Filmfare Awards.
Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam
Yet again the award for best actress in Filmfare Awards was bestowed to her for the movie Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962). Her seductive and spellbinding performance was highly praised. She played the role of Chhoti Bahu, trying to bring back her husband, Chhote Babu, from brothels. She was a good wife, who wishes to look after her husband and love him. She resorts to alcohol to woo her husband, even though, she did not like it. She skillfully enacts the confusions, sadness and desires of a wife who is caught between rituals and traditions of a family of Hindus and her spouse.
Pakeezah
This movie is a cult film in Hindi film industry for several reasons. This movie was released after the death of Meena Kumari, for acting in which she got nominated for the best actress award. In the film, she played the character of a well known courtesan and lover of a forest ranger and they decide to elope. But her popularity as a courtesan makes people identify her even after changing her name to Pakeezah (meaning of pure heart). Deserting her beloved (son of Shahabuddin), she comes back to the brothel again. Her lover marries somebody else and to that function she is brought to entertain the guests.
Kaajal was the film for which she got the award for best actress for the 4th time. Among the characters she did, many were sorrowful. Meena Kumari is known in movie industry as the Tragedy Queen.
